Chapter Eleven

“I am your company commander, Ensign Carver. Captain Meiklejohn, late of the Bengal Army.”

“Yes, they told me you were coming. You survived a shipwreck and came back to Bombay.”

“So, you know I am your direct senior?”

“Yes.”

Bob raised his voice to an infuriated bellow.

“Then stand to bloody attention, make your salute and call me sir!”

“But…”

“But nothing, you hopeless little brat! You have chosen to be a soldier and a soldier you goddam will be. Stand up straight!”

“But, we are volunteers… Sir.”

“So is every officer! You have volunteered to be a soldier. Make your choice, now – be a soldier or get out of my sight. Wear that uniform properly and show some pride in it or get the Hell out of my sight. Now!”

Carver tried to stand to attention, but he had not been listening when the sergeant-major had given his lesson to the other boys and did not know how.

“Is that the best you can do?”

“Yes, sir.”

“Then you are no use to me. Report to Colonel Parker and inform him that I have dismissed you from my company. He will find me a replacement who will make an attempt to do the job. Get out!”

“But, sir…”

“I said get out, or I will have my servants throw you out.”

The threat sufficed. To be manhandled by mere Indians was more humiliation than the boy could face. He ran.
